School Safety Updates: Tricia Ellison, School Safety Chair

        • Safety Drill Update: The school performed a second drill practice. Three classrooms were left open.  An email was sent out to the staff expressing the importance of a locked door.
        • A secure drill was performed the week of 10/7. The school safety chair reported that the drill was very successful. She informed that the door swipe worked perfectly in locking the doors.
        • Next drill: An upcoming bomb drill has been scheduled for November 8th. Here, a new app will be implemented to account for everyone at the school. Teachers will be trained on using the app on 10/21 in preparation for the drill.
        • During the SCC meeting, a question was asked about what happens if drills aren’t successful.  To address the question, Principal Jameson informed us that there are several measures in place such as, one on one conversations, school wide emails reminding teachers about the importance of a locked door.  Principal Jameson explained how magnets are used and how the locking mechanism (i.e., “latch”) looks when the door is locked (the door handle will still move, but the latch will not.

            • The school has been reporting all the drills outcomes to the “I Love you Guys” foundation. This foundation is research based and creates a national common language for crisis response and post-crisis reunification. Each incident creates investigations to improve safety for the future.
