3. School Safety Updates
Mr. Jameson explained that we don’t have a program yet for social-emotional learning. The school’s BLT is developing some topics in case the plan developed by the District is not ready for next year. This program will be based on a theme for each month, as follows:
August – PBIS – Rules, Keys, Community our Family, Classroom, and Responsibility
September – Emotions
October – Kindness and Respect
November – Gratitude
December – Service
January – Goal Setting
February – Compassion and Friendship
March – Growth Mindset
April – Perseverance
The last school drill is how to navigate a pandemic situation, so according to our experience, we think we are ready.
Mr. Jameson noted that the preschool van/bus issue has been solved.
4. Discuss SCC Open Seats for 2022-23 Year; Possibly Elect Leadership
Chair Rachel Anderson asked which parents are going to be back on the SCC next year. It appears that 5 of the 7 current parent positions are expiring this year. Rachel explained that the District now requires SCC chair training during the summer or early fall before we even meet as an SCC for the first time, and she was wondering if we wanted to elect a new chair now, so that person is prepared. The SCC decided not to elect new leadership today.
5. Discuss Publicizing our Years’ Work and Success to the Community and Legislators
Chair Rachel Anderson explained that the District suggested this as an item for discussion at our last SCC meeting of the year. The group discussed potential topics and the positive effect of sharing our interests with our stakeholder groups. Rachel offered to draft some messages for the school community, the school board, and our legislators.
6. Other Input/Questions
Mr. Jameson announced that the District has selected Alta View to offer all of its kindergarten classes as full-day classes. There will be 4 full-day sessions of kindergarten starting next year. This will require us to hire a new kindergarten teacher, but it will also reduce our number of kindergarten classes from 5 to 4. Kindergarten enrollment is so far up to 71 students. We will still have the diagnostic kindergarten as well, but that classroom will have to be moved. Parents will be given the option, still, to send their children to only half of the day, if they are concerned about a full day. The committee expressed concerns about the logistics of allowing children to leave halfway through the day, but also noted that it will be easier for parents to “buy-in” to the program if they feel they aren’t being forced, and they still have options. Many will likely see the benefits once their children start.
Chair Rachel Anderson asked if there is any news about the school start-time survey that the District sent out. Mr. Jameson said that his understanding is that the consensus was that the majority prefer Alta View start time says the same. It also appears that we will be keeping our Friday early-out day.
7. Adjourn
Rachel Anderson adjourned the meeting at 4:18 p.m.
