Snow Day • Canyons District Schools Cancelled, Monday, Feb. 3, 2020

The heavy snow and strong winds pelting the Salt Lake Valley have prompted the closure of schools today, Feb. 3, 2020, in Canyons School District.

Canyons Superintendent Dr. Jim Briscoe made the decision to call a “Snow Day” after receiving road-condition reports from bus drivers in CSD’s Transportation Department, who have been attempting to traverse Canyons community thoroughfares since 4 a.m. The drivers report unsafe conditions in many parts of the District.

The quick-moving storm has made it difficult for snowplows to keep the streets clear of snow and ice. On many roads in Canyons’ boundaries, especially on the eastern benches, it’s not safe to attempt to navigate the buses on the roads.

Consideration also was made for teachers and staff who would have had to commute to work on slick and snowy roads in the early-morning hours.

Briscoe also took into consideration the current weather conditions, the amount of snowfall, and the forecasted weather throughout the morning commute. As student safety is Canyons District’s No. 1 priority, Dr. Briscoe, after consulting with the Board of Education, opted to cancel school for the day.

Any extracurricular activities and events, classes at the Canyons Family Center, also are cancelled due to the extreme weather and dangerous road conditions.

Parents have been notified via the District’s emergency notification system. Robo-calls, emails and text messages were sent to parents and guardians by 5:15 a.m. Monday. The announcement also was posted on Canyons District’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, as well as school websites.

The cancellation is for one day only. Additional information will be sent to the Canyons community if the regular school schedule is altered in subsequent days.

This is the second weather-related cancellation of school in Canyons District’s history.
