Business Items:

  1. School Safety Drill Update: Scott Jameson. The April drill was an earthquake drill in conjunction with the Utah Shake Out. This took place on April 15, 2021 at 10:15 AM. This was a school wide drill and was run by Mr. Flink. This drill was successful. Some students were outside when the drill happened and the school was able to address outdoor earthquake safety with the students.

This was an informative agenda item only.

  1. Review and approval of the carryover of 2020-21 addendum to support the 2021-22 school year: Scott Jameson. Due to the pandemic, Alta View Elementary was not able to use all of the funding for our 2020-21 TSSP allocations. We requested that we be allowed to carry over our TSSP through the 2021-22 school year. This will allow us to use the money when all students will hopefully be back in the building and will benefit from the carry-overed funding. The total carry-over amount is approximately $32,000. We were unable to hire additional aids, we did not hire many substitutes (most substituting was done in-house), our summer reading program last summer, and KEYS awards. The carry-over funding will allow us to give extra support to students as they come back to school in person.

This carry-over will help with our 2021-22 TSSP goals, which we voted to adopt at the last SCC meeting.

Motion made to approve by Vickie Hulderson, seconded by Pamela Brooks. Approved- 11 votes for, 0 against, 1 absent.

  1. Equity Update- Amy Gutierrez:

Ms. Gutierrez directed the SCC to Menti.com to complete an equity activity. The question posed was “What does equity mean to you?” She then introduced what the Utah Board of Education says about equity. The SCC read Resolution No. 2021-01 from the Utah State Board of Education, “Denouncing Racism and Embracing Equity.” SCC members partnered up and discussed the document, and had a large group discussion about how to stop racism in our schools. We discussed the challenges associated with our limitations in budgeting and recruiting, and expressed a desire to continue to find ways of creating more diverse classrooms, and using the Second Step program to help our students understand diversity, equity issues, and empathy. The District is working on equity at the District level and we are hopeful that we will have more information soon on that. The SCC would like to move forward with some actionable items to address the equity within our school, but we may have to wait until we can work in conjunction with the District.

This was an informative agenda item.

Other Input/Questions:

Vickie Hulderson suggested that we have a follow-up on the last meeting in November of 2021 to check in with the teachers and make sure the new programs that we are implementing for the 2021-22 school year aren’t too much work. We will follow up next month with a discussion about making sure teachers aren’t too overwhelmed.

We will continue with the May 18, 2021 meeting as planned. It will be in-person at the school.

Meeting adjourned at 4:32 PM by Rachel Anderson
